Helsinki Central Railway Station
📍 Finland
Helsinki Central Railway Station stands on Kaivokatu in the city centre, beside Railway Square, and serves as the capital’s main hub for commuter and long-distance trains. Designed by Eliel Saarinen and opened in 1919, it is a landmark of Finnish architecture, combining National Romantic influences with strong, geometric forms. Its granite façade is defined by a monumental arched window and a tall clock tower. Four stone figures by sculptor Emil Wikström flank the main entrance, each holding a spherical lamp; these lantern bearers have become enduring symbols of Helsinki. Viewed from across Kaivokatu, the tower, broad façade and statues form a recognizable composition, while closer views bring out the figures’ stylized faces and the weight of the granite masonry. Trams passing in front of the station place this monumental building within the everyday movement of the city.
