๐ From Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, United States
Hell Gate Bridge is a monumental steel railroad arch spanning Hell Gate, the turbulent East River channel between Astoria, Queens, and Wards Island. Opened in 1917 and designed under engineer Gustav Lindenthal, it forms a vital rail link used by Amtrak and freight trains. The bridge is recognizable by its sweeping red arch and massive masonry towers, whose fortress-like scale contrasts with the slender steel ribs. From the Astoria Park waterfront, the structure frames passing trains, river traffic, and the nearby RFK Bridge; late-day light brings out the warm tones of the steel and the rough texture of the stonework.
