The Hawthorne Bridge in Portland, Oregon is an iconic bridge with a unique style that connects the east and west sides of the city. It was built in 1910 and was the first to feature a double-leaf bascule draw that opens to allow ships and boats to pass through. It stretches over the Willamette River, offering beautiful views of the downtown skyline. The bridge has become a popular spot for walkers and cyclists to take in the river and skyline, as well as the iconic Red And White Balloon sign at the truss. It is illuminated at night with LED lights and often appears in movie backgrounds. Nautical ships, ferries, and Shell Oil barges can sometimes be seen passing through the opening of the bridge. There are several parks and greenways along the river that can be accessed from the bridge.
