Hawa Mahal
📍 From Inside, India
Hawa Mahal, the “Palace of Winds,” stands in Jaipur’s historic walled city beside the City Palace complex. Built in 1799 for Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this five-storey palace is distinguished by a pink and red sandstone façade patterned with 953 small windows, known as jharokhas. Its lattice screens allowed women of the royal household to watch street life and ceremonial processions while remaining out of public view, reflecting the court’s practice of purdah. The openings also encouraged airflow, giving the palace its evocative name. From the street, tiers of projecting windows, delicate arches and small domes create the recognizable honeycomb-like elevation, with the upper storeys narrowing toward the skyline. The contrast between this intricate royal screen and the active bazaar below gives photographs a distinctly Jaipur setting, linking palace architecture with the everyday life of the old city.
