Harbor Towers
📍 United States
Harbor Towers is a pair of 40-story residential high-rises on India Wharf, part of Boston’s downtown waterfront just south of the New England Aquarium. Completed in 1971 and designed by I. M. Pei & Partners, the towers are prominent examples of Brutalist architecture, with pale concrete façades and deeply recessed windows arranged in repetitive grids. Their monumental scale reflects the urban-renewal era’s transformation of Boston’s working waterfront, contrasting sharply with the older brick wharf buildings nearby. Seen from the harbor, the twin vertical forms stand against the downtown office skyline; closer views emphasize the concrete geometry and the shifting shadows within the window recesses. The Rose Kennedy Greenway runs just inland, placing the complex between the harbor edge and the city’s central green corridor.
