Hanauma Bay is a protected marine embayment on southeastern Oʻahu, within Honolulu and beside the volcanic landscape of Koko Head. The curved bay occupies part of an ancient tuff cone whose seaward wall was breached and reshaped by erosion, creating a sheltered basin with shallow coral reef. From the upper overlook, the recognizable scene combines a broad crescent of pale sand, turquoise water, dark reef patterns, and steep, dry crater ridges; from shore level, the bay’s scale and layered volcanic textures become more apparent. Visitor access is regulated to reduce pressure on the marine ecosystem, and posted conservation rules should be followed, especially the prohibition on touching or standing on coral and disturbing wildlife.
