Hampstead Heath is a broad expanse of open land in north London, stretching between Hampstead and Highgate. Its rolling grassland, mature woods and ponds retain a rural character that contrasts with the formal layouts of many London parks. Parliament Hill, on the southeastern side, provides the Heath’s defining city view: a broad grassy slope falling away beneath a skyline punctuated by the City’s clustered towers. The bathing ponds are part of London’s long-established outdoor-swimming culture, bringing everyday activity to the wooded watersides. On the northern edge, Kenwood House adds an architectural counterpoint, its pale neoclassical façade set against sweeping lawns and trees. Together, these landscapes make the Heath recognizable as both a retreat from London and a place from which to see it.
