Hamburger Kunsthalle stands beside Hamburg’s central station, a short walk from the Binnenalster, and brings together three connected buildings from different architectural eras. Its collection ranges from medieval altarpieces and Dutch Old Masters to modern and contemporary art, with German Romanticism a particular strength; works by Caspar David Friedrich include the celebrated Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. Outside, the ornate red-brick historic building contrasts sharply with the pale, cubic Galerie der Gegenwart, designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers. This meeting of masonry, arched windows and strict modern geometry gives the museum a distinctive profile, while the elevated forecourt opens views toward the city center.
