Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in Reykjavík, located in the city center. Designed by architect Gudjon Samúelsson, it was consecrated in 1986. The church is named after 17th century Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson. It stands 74.5 m (244 ft) tall, making it the country's tallest building. Inside is an expansive organ with over 5,000 pipes. There is an elevator to the top of the tower offering a stunning view of Reykjavik and the surrounding area. The characteristic stepped tower is inspired by the basalt columns of the Icelandic landscape. The front facade of the church is marked by a towering glass vestibule. From the main entrance of the church, visitors can enter the nave, which is supported by concrete columns and brightened with majestic stained glass windows.
