Hallgrimskirkja
📍 From Inside, Iceland
Hallgrimskirkja is an awe-inspiring Scandinavian church with its towering steeple and prominent position overlooking the entire city. This Lutheran church is the largest in Iceland, standing at a height of over 73 m (244 ft). Designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samuelsson, the construction of Hallgrimskirkja began in 1945, but it was only completed in 1986. The beautiful hexagonal tiling on the church’s stepped tower and the spire is said to represent the lava fields of Iceland. Inside the church, you can find a large pipe organ with over 5,000 pipes. There is also a lift which will take you to the top of the tower for panoramic views of the city. You can explore the surrounding park, Laurebjörgarnar, and its adjacent courtyard, Barónsstíg, after a visit to the church.
