📍 United States
Haleakalā is the vast shield volcano that forms eastern Maui, rising above Kula’s upland slopes to a summit 10,023 feet (3,055 meters) above sea level. Its Hawaiian name means “house of the sun.” Within Haleakalā National Park, the summit overlooks a broad depression shaped by erosion and later volcanic activity, rather than a simple crater left by one eruption. Cinder cones, rust-red slopes, dark lava, and sparse vegetation give the basin its distinctive textures and scale; clouds below the rim can separate this stark landscape from the greener island beneath. Native Haleakalā silverswords stand out as silvery, spiked rosettes against the volcanic ground. Sunrise visits to the park’s summit district require an advance reservation, an important constraint for photographing the changing light over the basin.
