Hagia Sophia Mosque, also known as Ayasofya Camii, is one of Istanbul's most iconic places of worship. Built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, it remained a Christian church until the 15th century, when the Ottomans turned it into a grand mosque. Today, the site is a popular destination for tourists, who come to admire its grandeur and unique architecture. Originally, the building was constructed with a huge dome, covering a vast interior, and surrounded by four minarets. The interior of the mosque has been greatly altered over the centuries, but the original domed area still retains a colorful backdrop of ancient murals and intricate detailing. Inside, a vast collection of Islamic artifacts, antiques, tapestries and illuminations can be seen. Hagia Sophia Mosque is open to visitors every day, offering prayer services and guided tours of its striking interior.
