📍 Hungary
The Benedictine Church of St Ignatius of Loyola stands on Széchenyi Square in Győr’s historic center, forming part of the monastery and school complex that defines one side of the plaza. Built for the Jesuits in the 17th century and later entrusted to the Benedictines, it is an important example of early Baroque church architecture in Hungary. Its balanced twin-towered façade creates a strong visual anchor among the square’s pastel townhouses, while the interior shifts to richer theatricality: gilded altars, marble-like surfaces and 18th-century ceiling frescoes by Austrian Baroque painter Paul Troger draw the eye upward. The broad square allows an unobstructed view of the façade, while closer compositions reveal sculptural details and the contrast between pale stonework and warm walls.
