Gyges Tümülüsü
📍 Türkiye
Gyges Tümülüsü is an earthen burial mound in Bin Tepe, the Lydian necropolis north of ancient Sardis in the Salihli area. Its name refers to Gyges, the seventh-century BCE king who founded Lydia’s Mermnad dynasty. Bin Tepe means “a thousand hills,” evoking the many burial mounds scattered across this landscape. These monumental graves reflect the wealth and status of the Lydian elite, whose kingdom was centered at Sardis. Visually, the mound’s broad silhouette contrasts with the surrounding agricultural plain, while neighboring tumuli create the repeating, rounded forms that make this ancient burial landscape recognizable.
