The Gustav Mahler Musician Memorial in Dobbiaco, or Toblach in German, marks the Austrian composer’s close connection with this South Tyrolean mountain town. Mahler spent the summers of 1908–1910 composing nearby, completing Das Lied von der Erde and his Ninth Symphony and beginning the unfinished Tenth. The monument links his final creative period to the Dolomite landscape whose solitude and natural sounds accompanied his work.
