Gus S. Wortham Fountain is a monument to the memory of a prominent Houstonian, decorated with an impressive aquatic display. Situated in Downtown Houston's Sam Houston Park, the fountain was erected in 1977, and consists of several large granite monoliths arranged in a cascading fountain, with marble basins beneath. The grand centerpiece is a red granite obelisk, which raises twenty feet high and has a carving of the letter "W" set in gold at its peak in honor of Wortham. The water cascades down over trees, rock formations and sculptures, making the fountain a popular photography spot.
