📍 Mexico
Grupo de las Monjas is a compact palace-like complex on the western side of Chichén Itzá’s central plaza composed of several low, rectilinear buildings arranged around enclosed courtyards. It served as an elite administrative-residential compound during the Terminal Classic–Early Postclassic period and is important as an example of the site’s fusion of Puuc, Chenes and Toltec-inspired decorative vocabularies. The complex gets its Spanish name (“Nunnery”) because the many small, cell-like rooms and long colonnaded facades suggested a convent to early visitors.

Architecturally it features long façades punctuated by narrow doorways and multiple rooms fronting internal courtyards; façade ornament includes finely worked stone mosaics, latticework, columned galleries and carved iconographic elements such as stylized serpent and rain‑deity motifs that link it to the broader sculptural program of Chichén Itzá. The arrangement of rooms and patios indicates combined residential, administrative and ritual usage by elite households rather than a religious order. Unique on-site curiosities include well-preserved friezes and the sense of domestic scale—visitors can appreciate how civic and ceremonial life at Chichén Itzá extended beyond the great pyramids into articulated urban compounds.
