Machu Picchu is one of the world's most impressive and iconic tourist attractions. Located in the Peruvian Andes 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, it was built by the Incan emperor Pachacuti in the 15th Century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Machu Picchu is often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas" because it was discovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham, and believed to be the most intact ruin of the Incan Empire. It consists of vast terraces and three magnificent palaces that form the main temple complex, surrounded by beautiful stone structures, such as the Intihuatana (the Inca sun clock), the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the famous Sacred Rock. Machu Picchu is also home to incredible flora and fauna, as well as many Inca trails that lead to different sites on the mountain. The ruins never fail to impress travelers, and the incredible archaeological site can be experienced with a guided tour or on an independent day hike.
