Große Freiheit is a short, notorious side-street off the Reeperbahn in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, famed as a crucible of nightlife, live music and counterculture. Its name — “Great Freedom” — dates to 1610, when Duke Christian IV granted religious and commercial liberties to non-Lutherans in the formerly fortified area; that legacy of exception helped shape a permissive atmosphere that persisted into the 20th century.
