📍 Netherlands
Grote Markt is the historic market square at the heart of Nijmegen, tucked below the tower of St. Stephen’s Church and linked to it by the ornate Kerkboog passage. Its architectural anchor is De Waagh, a richly decorated early-17th-century weigh house with stepped gables, red-and-white shutters and a distinctive corner tower. Traditional façades, café terraces and the statue of Mariken van Nieumeghen—a figure from a celebrated medieval Dutch morality tale associated with the city—give the square a strong sense of local identity. Photographs framed through the Kerkboog emphasize the contrast between the intimate market space and the soaring church beyond, while the varied brickwork and gables are especially expressive in low, angled light.
