Greenstone Terrace
📍 United Kingdom
Greenstone Terrace is an iron age hillfort set on a flat topped hill near Greenstone Village in the Lincolnshire Wolds, England. It is thought to date from the Iron Age period, possibly constructed as part of a network of similar encampments in the area. The terrace is roughly triangular in shape, measuring some 50 metres in width and 150 metres in length. The site provides extensive views of the Wolds and the lowlands around it. Inside the ramparts, there is a small pond, thought to have been designed to provide a safe water source for those who settled at the terrace. It is also thought that the terrace would have been used as a place of refuge during times of strife. There are no visible signs of habitation although the terrace would have been used as a religious site too. It is a popular destination for local historians and walkers, who come to explore its archaeological remains and to take in the spectacular views of the Wolds.
