Green Cove Springs is the seat of Clay County in northeastern Florida, on the west bank of the St. Johns River south of Jacksonville. Named for its natural spring and river cove, the town became a mineral-water resort in the nineteenth century. The spring remains the centerpiece of waterfront Spring Park, supplying a public swimming pool before its water flows into the river. Spreading live oaks draped in Spanish moss frame views across the broad St. Johns, while the park’s pier creates a strong line extending into the water. These shaded riverfront scenes connect the city’s present-day public spaces with the spring that shaped its identity.
