📍 United States
Great Shiplock Park is a waterfront park on the eastern edge of downtown Richmond, Virginia, where the historic Richmond Dock connected with the tidal James River. Its nineteenth-century shiplock recalls Richmond’s role as a working port: vessels passed through the lock between the river and the dock basin, negotiating their different water levels. Weathered masonry, elongated lock chambers and still canal water make the engineering legible in the landscape, contrasting with the greenery along the banks. A footbridge connects the park with Chapel Island, where wooded riverside paths offer a different perspective on this former commercial waterfront.
