Great Langdale is a glacial valley west of Ambleside in Cumbria’s Lake District, with Chapel Stile near its eastern end and the Langdale Pikes rising above its northern side. Dry-stone walls divide the green valley floor, while stone farmhouses, grazing sheep and the winding Great Langdale Beck give scale to the steep, craggy fells. The distinctive summits of Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle form a recognizable skyline across the open fields near the valley head. These heights also preserve evidence of Neolithic axe-making: fine-grained volcanic stone from the Langdale fells was shaped into axes that circulated across Britain, linking today’s pastoral landscape with a major prehistoric industry.
