📍 Iran
Tehran’s Grand Bazaar is a vast commercial district in the city’s historic center, south of Golestan Palace, with covered lanes linking shops, courtyards, caravanserais and mosques. Much of its surviving architecture reflects Tehran’s expansion as the Qajar capital, when the bazaar became central to the city’s economic and social life. Its merchant networks also played important roles in Iran’s Constitutional Revolution and the 1979 revolution. This remains a working marketplace, with sections specializing in carpets, textiles, gold and other goods rather than a single hall devoted to souvenirs. Repeated brick vaults, domed intersections and light entering through roof openings give the interiors their distinctive rhythm; tightly packed shopfronts and goods moving through narrow passages reveal the human scale of this extensive trading network.
