Gosaikunda is a sacred alpine lake in Nepal’s central Himalaya, within Langtang National Park in Rasuwa District and approached from trekking routes connected with the Ghyangphedi region. Lying at about 4,380 metres, it occupies a stark basin of rock, snowfields and high ridges, where the deep blue water creates strong reflections in calm conditions. Hindus associate the lake with Shiva, while Buddhists also revere the area; stone shrines, tridents and prayer flags reveal its continuing spiritual importance. During the Janai Purnima festival, pilgrims gather here for ritual bathing despite the cold and altitude. The lake and surrounding wetlands form a Ramsar-listed high-altitude ecosystem, so visitors should avoid disturbing the shoreline and treat religious objects and ceremonies respectfully.
