Gornergrat is the rocky ridge and high viewpoint above Zermatt reached by the cog railway terminus that crowns the valley. In local context it functions as Zermatt’s classic panorama perch: the ridge frames a broad sweep of the Pennine Alps, including the pyramidal Matterhorn and the serried summits and ice fields of the Monte Rosa group, plus the braided Gorner Glacier flowing through the cirque below. Visually the site offers strong geometric contrasts—sharp granite ridges and serrated snow fields against the horizontal plane of the glacier—so compositions that pair foreground rail or terrace lines with distant peaks work well.
