Gornergletscher is a valley glacier above Zermatt in Switzerland’s canton of Valais, part of the extensive glacier system around the Monte Rosa massif. The Gornergrat ridge, reached by cogwheel railway from Zermatt, offers an elevated view across the glacier basin toward Monte Rosa, with the Matterhorn rising separately to the west. Crevasses and dark bands of rock debris break up the pale ice, revealing its movement through a landscape dwarfed by high Alpine summits. The glacier’s substantial retreat has exposed rock and left moraines along the valley, making the changing extent of the ice an important part of the scene rather than simply a distant mountain backdrop.
