Gorée is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a small island off the coast of Dakar, Senegal. This little fishing village is a legacy of its past as a major slave trading post in the 15th and 16th centuries. The island is a representation of the Atlantic Slave Trade and its legacies, having been instilled with local, European and African cultural elements.

It is a wanderlust of colonial architecture, harbor-front cafes and cobblestone alleys, with breathtaking scenes from centuries past and tales woven into its pastel facades. Visit Fort d'Estrées, Casa de Fouteurs, Maison des Esclaves, the Marine Cemetery and the Gorée Museum which houses artifacts from the 15th - 18th centuries. The streets of the old city are usually bustling with life; bright clothing, local treats and the bustling Dakar nightlife setting the scene. Enjoy local seafood dishes, take a boat tour or ferry ride to the island and get lost in the many alleys and courtyards the island offers. There are plenty of boutiques, galleries, souvenirs and crafts to be found too. Gorée is definitely not to be missed. It will transport you back in time to a very poignant part of Africa’s history. Take a walk through the picturesque old city and soak in the atmosphere and energy of this colorful slice of history.
