Gordon Dam
📍 Australia
Gordon Dam is a magnificent sight in Strathgordon, Australia. Located just outside of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, it is the highest dam in the state, at 35 metres. The dam holds back the water of the mighty Franklin and Gordon Rivers, creating an expansive lake known as Lake Gordon. From the viewing platform at the dam wall, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the majestic mountain ranges, ancient rainforests, and rugged gorges. A short walk from the viewing platform will take you to the Gordon Power Station, one of the largest underground power stations in Australia. Here you can see all the dramatic machinery involved in generating hydroelectric power. It is easy to access the dam by walking the 6.2 kilometre round-trip trail or by cage boat, taking a ride on the iconic Gordon River ferry. Whether rain or shine, Gordon Dam is an essential addition to any trip exploring the beauty of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
