📍 China
Gongtan Ancient Town sits above the Wu River in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Chongqing, near the Guizhou border rather than in Tongren. Historically a river-trading settlement, it is known for wooden stilt houses, or diaojiaolou, associated with local Tujia architecture. Timber supports, projecting balconies and tiled roofs form a layered waterfront against steep mountain slopes. The town was relocated for a hydropower reservoir project, with traditional buildings rebuilt at the new site—an important distinction behind its old-town appearance. Stone-paved lanes and weathered wooden façades offer intimate architectural detail, while wider river views show how the tightly clustered buildings follow the terrain above the green water.
