Gole dell'Alcantara are the narrow basalt gorges carved by the Alcantara River on the north flank of Sicily, between the Catania and Messina areas. The site is geologically striking: columnar basalt formed by cooling lava from nearby volcanic activity meets persistent river erosion, producing vertical, hexagonal pillars, undercut walls and pothole-textured ledges. Visually the gorge is about contrasts—dark, geometric rock faces against bright river pools, bands of moss and mineral staining, and changing reflections where the water slows. Compositional opportunities include the canyon’s repeating vertical rhythms, intimate close-ups of basalt geometry, and long, low-angle shots that emphasize depth and scale; metal walkways and footbridges provide common vantage points and access along the rim and down toward the river. Respect local signage and any restricted sections near the water.
