
The Golden Altar Iglesia de San Jose of Casco Viejo in Panama City is an impressive site to behold. This historic church, completed in 1760 and listed as a protected monument by UNESCO, features neoclassical and baroque architectural details. The main attraction is in the altar area: the golden altar of San José is carved from cedar wood and covered with gold sheets. It is decorated with 42 oil paintings depicting the life of Jesus and two angels made of silver. Adjacent to the church at its rear is the dome of la Vera Cruz, built in the 17th century and used for religious ceremonies. The courtyard also features unique trompe l'oeil paintings from the 19th century. Visitors can explore the church and its many sculptures and fountains, engaging in a rich experience of cultural heritage.
