📍 From Drone, Faroe Islands
Gjógv is a small village at the northeastern tip of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands, named for the narrow, sea-filled gorge that serves as its natural harbour. The Faroese name means “gorge,” and the inlet extends roughly 200 metres inland between steep rock walls. This unusual landing place reflects the close relationship between Faroese settlements, fishing, and a coastline with few sheltered harbours. Brightly painted houses sit above the inlet, backed by grassy mountain slopes. Viewed from the rim, the gorge creates a strong line toward the open sea, while its dark, textured walls emphasize the scale of the channel and contrast with the green turf and compact village.
