Gjógv
📍 From Cliff, Faroe Islands
Gjógv is an old fishing village situated on the northern coast of the island of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands. The village itself is composed of only around 20 residential homes spread out along the cliff edge. At the bottom of the cliff is the tiny hamlet of Gjógv. Its name, which derives from the ancient Norse language, means “Gorge”.

The main attraction is the stunning Gjógv Gorge which runs along the length of the village and down to the harbour. It’s surrounded on either side by tall, steep cliffs and is a popular spot for sightseeing and photography. The waters of the harbour below are very clear, making it a great spot for swimming and snorkelling. In addition, the nearby landscape is perfect for both walking and hiking, with amazing views of the surrounding hills. A visit to Gjógv also wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the old church which dates back to the 16th century. It’s a peaceful and tranquil place which has been beautifully preserved and serves as a reminder of the village’s long history.
