Girona, in northeastern Catalonia, is shaped by the Onyar River and the steep streets of its old town, the Barri Vell. Above the eastern bank, a monumental staircase leads to the cathedral, whose Baroque façade fronts a vast, single Gothic nave. Nearby, the Call, Girona’s historic Jewish quarter, preserves narrow lanes and stone passages associated with the Jewish community that lived here during the Middle Ages. Walkable sections of the old city walls reveal the relationship between these tightly packed streets, tiled rooftops, church towers, and the surrounding hills.
