Girona is a historic city in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, centered on the Onyar River and framed by medieval walls and hilltop streets. Its appeal lies in a compact layering of eras: a maze-like Jewish Quarter of narrow stone alleys, Roman and medieval ramparts that form promenades above the city, and a cathedral whose Baroque façade fronts an unusually broad Gothic nave. The riverbank row of pastel houses and iron bridges creates one of the city’s most photographed motifs, with clear reflections in calm water and strong shadow-and-light contrasts in late afternoon. Textures of worn stone, tight stairways rising toward the cathedral, and the elevated wall walkways that give sweeping views of tile roofs and surrounding hills are the visual signatures photographers notice. Sections of the old walls are walkable, and the dense historic center is largely pedestrian in character.
