๐ Italy
The Gessi Triassici are striking gypsum outcrops in the upper Secchia Valley, within the Reggio Emilia Apennines and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park. Formed as evaporite deposits during the Triassic period and later folded and uplifted with the Apennines, these pale rocks reveal a geological history very different from the surrounding wooded slopes. Water has dissolved the gypsum into a karst landscape of caves, sinkholes, gullies and exposed ridges. Along the Secchia, the contrast between light, fractured rock, dark vegetation and the river makes the area especially recognizable, while close views reveal layered, crystalline and weathered textures. The formations are fragile; caves and sensitive karst features should be approached only through authorized access.
