Named after the volcanic island it sits on, Hiroshima is the largest city in western Japan. It is perhaps best known for being the site of the world's first atomic bombing. There are no reminders of that dark episode in its history however, as Hiroshima has since been rebuilt as an attractive and vibrant modern city.

There is the Hondori Shopping Arcade, where several hundred shops can be found, as well as the Atomic Bomb Dome Shopping Mall, where you can find unusual souvenirs. For foodies, Hiroshima is a dream destination: try their famed okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake made with egg, cabbage, noodles and pork in a deliciously rich sauce.
