General Post Office
📍 From O'Connell Street, Ireland
The General Post Office (GPO) in North City, Ireland, is a historic landmark located on the north end of O'Connell Street. The building was completed in 1818 as a neoclassical structure and is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Ireland. The facade features a portico with four hexastyle Corinthian columns and several side decorations. GPO was the headquarters of the then revolutionary organization, the Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising of 1916, after which it underwent extensive remodelling and became the focal point of the Grafton Street Unified Authority. It is now a museum dedicated to the history of the Irish Post Office and the 1916 Rising, with galleries, interactive displays and a photographic exhibition. Visitors can explore the original GPO building, which is now open to the public, or visit an interactive exhibition of the Irish Post Office which offers an insight into its operations, from the earliest days to the present.
