A steep, windswept islet linked to the Basque coast by a narrow stone bridge and flight of steps, Gaztelugatxe (Gaztelugatxeko Doniene) is a striking natural and cultural landmark on Bizkaia’s coastline. Its craggy basalt outcrop, battered by Cantabrian waves, carries a small hermitage—San Juan de Gaztelugatxe—perched at the summit and visible for miles. The place is important for its dramatic scenery, spiritual resonance and storied past: the chapel’s origins are medieval (references from the 10th–11th centuries), repeatedly repaired after storms, pirate attacks and a notable 19th-century rebuilding; relics of Romanesque masonry survive alongside later stonework. The approach involves roughly 241 stone steps that wind around the rock, and a narrow arched bridge that connects the isle to the mainland—both distinctive architectural features integral to the site’s character. Local traditions include ringing the chapel bell three times while making a wish; fishermen and sailors historically invoked the hermitage’s protection. Gaztelugatxe sits within a protected coastal landscape (Gaztelugatxeko Doniene), and its cinematic exposure—seen as “Dragonstone” in a popular TV series—has heightened international interest, making its blend of geology, history and folklore uniquely memorable.
