📍 From Drone, Spain
Gaztelugatxe is a rugged islet on the Bay of Biscay, off the Basque coast between Bakio and Bermeo. Its Basque name, Gaztelugatxeko Doniene, refers to the hermitage of Saint John that crowns the rock. A narrow stone bridge links the island to the mainland, followed by a steep staircase that zigzags above dark cliffs and sea-cut formations. From elevated viewpoints, the curving steps create the site’s most recognizable composition, while waves, layered rock and changing Atlantic light add texture and scale. Gaztelugatxe also served as a filming location for Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. Access involves a demanding walk with many steps, and entry controls may apply during busy periods to protect the site.
