Gay Head Cliffs
📍 United States
The Gay Head Cliffs rise above the coast at Aquinnah, on the western tip of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Coastal erosion reveals striking bands of red, ochre, gray and white clay, creating the layered headland that gave Gay Head its English name. The cliffs are sacred to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), whose ancestral homeland includes this end of the island. Above the multicolored slopes, the red-brick Gay Head Light forms a recognizable landmark; the lighthouse was moved inland in 2015 as erosion threatened its former position. Views from the overlook emphasize the contrast between the clay layers, pale beach and open water, while the shoreline below reveals the cliffs’ scale. Climbing the cliffs and removing clay are prohibited to protect this fragile landscape.
