Gates of Dawn
📍 Lithuania
A surviving medieval city gate in Vilnius’ old town, the Gates of Dawn (Aušros Vartai) is both an architectural remnant of the 16th-century defensive walls and one of Lithuania’s most important religious shrines. Built as part of the city fortifications, the brick-and-stone gate is the only major gate left from the original ring of walls; its narrow passage and flanking towers recall Vilnius’s fortified past. What makes the site exceptional is the small chapel within the gate that houses the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy — a highly venerated image believed by many to be miraculous and a focal point for Catholic and Orthodox devotion alike. The icon, a painted panel later covered with an ornate silver riza, attracts pilgrims who leave ex-votos and prayers; the tradition gives the gate a dual character as both historic monument and living sacred place. Architecturally the exterior retains later Renaissance and Baroque modifications, while the chapel interior is richly adorned and intimate, accessible through the gate’s passage. Unique to the site is this fusion of urban military architecture and an active pilgrimage chapel embedded in the city fabric, making it central to Vilnius’s spiritual and civic identity.
