The Garita de Vigilancia and Campo de Concentración Dachau is a memorial site located about 16 kilometres northwest of Munich, in the town of Dachau. It was the first concentration camp established by the Nazis in 1933, and remained in operation until the end of World War II in 1945. It acted as a prototype for the later mass killing camps that the Nazis would build in Eastern Europe. Visitors to the camp can explore the memorial exhibitions, walk around the former concentration camp, view the crematorium and the site of the gas chambers. There are also memorial sites and monuments honoring the victims of the concentration camp. The self-guided tour includes a detailed audio tour with interviews of survivors and unique historic photos. The park includes an International Monument, a memorial mosaic and individual memorial plaques for the victims. A visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp is a highly recommended experience for those visiting Germany, providing insight into one of the darkest times in human history.
