A narrow river gorge and series of clear pools carved into the bedrock just outside the village of Bohonal, the Garganta de la Zoa is a local natural landmark prized for its compact cascades, rock-walled channels and refreshing bathing spots. It’s important as a summertime refuge in Extremadura’s warm climate and as a small but biodiverse riparian corridor: lush willow and alder margins, riverine grasses and mosses shelter amphibians and insects, while kingfisher, grey wagtail and other birds frequent the pools. Seasonal flow is a key feature — after autumn and winter rains the gorge becomes a lively sequence of falls and deep plunge-pools; in late summer only isolated pools remain, giving each visit a different character.
Historically the gorge has shaped local land use: its reliable water influenced past springtime grazing and traditional village access to fresh water, which is still visible in modest stone access paths and worn rock steps. Unique local notes: the Zoa’s compact scale makes it a favored spot for short nature walks, photography at low sunlight, and natural swimming; some stretches are narrow and slippery, and municipal notices sometimes limit access to protect nesting birds or after heavy rain.
