Kaohsiung Main Public Library stands in Cianjhen District’s Asia New Bay Area, close to the harbor, Kaohsiung Exhibition Center, and the landmark 85 Sky Tower. Opened in 2014 and designed by Mecanoo with MAYU Architects, it reflects the city’s transformation from an industrial port into a center for culture and contemporary design. Four structural cores support much of the building, creating an unusually open ground level, while planted terraces, reading areas, and a rooftop garden soften its glass-and-steel form. From the forecourt, the gridded façade frames layers of greenery and interior activity; after sunset, illuminated rooms turn the library into a transparent lantern against the surrounding high-rise skyline.
