Gamla kirkjan
📍 Iceland
Gamla kirkjan in Reykholt is the small “old church” that anchors a site of outsized cultural importance in Iceland: the homestead and literary legacy of Snorri Sturluson, medieval chieftain, historian and poet. The church marks Reykholt’s role as a spiritual and community center across centuries and is valued as part of the ensemble of medieval and post‑medieval remains that illustrate Iceland’s transition from paganism to a literate Christian society.

Architecturally it is a modest rural Icelandic church: a compact, rectangular nave with a steep pitched roof and simple timber construction and detailing typical of local vernacular churches, conveying functionality and restraint rather than ornament. Its setting — immediately adjacent to Snorri’s pool (Snorralaug), the remains of his manor and the modern museum — gives the building extra significance: it is not only a house of worship but a marker of the literary and political life that produced the sagas. Uniquely, Gamla kirkjan is experienced as part of a cultural circuit rather than a standalone attraction; visits are usually combined with the Reykholt Snorri Sturluson Museum and guided interpretation about Snorri’s manuscripts, the medieval legal and ecclesiastical role of Reykholt, and the site’s continuous use from medieval times to the present.
