Ca' d'Oro — formally the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca' d'Oro — is one of Venice’s most celebrated palazzi on the Grand Canal, notable both as an architectural masterpiece of Venetian Gothic and as a compact museum housing an exceptional private collection. Built in the mid-15th century for the Contarini family, its openwork marble loggia, ogee arches, delicate tracery and polychrome stonework create the “lace-like” façade that gives the palace its popular name (“House of Gold”). In the late 19th–early 20th century Baron Giorgio Franchetti assembled paintings, sculpture, tapestries, glass and bronzes and restored the palace; he bequeathed the property and his collection to the Italian state, forming the nucleus of today’s gallery.
