Galgentor, also known as Würzburger Tor, marks the northeastern edge of Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s walled old town, where Galgengasse meets the former road toward Würzburg. Its name, meaning “Gallows Gate,” recalls the execution site once located beyond the defenses on Galgenberg. The stone arch, compact gate tower, red-tiled roof and adjoining fortification wall form a recognizable transition between the enclosed medieval street plan and the open ground outside. From within the old town, the straight approach along Galgengasse emphasizes the gateway’s framing effect; from beyond the wall, its masonry and roofline stand out against Rothenburg’s clustered historic buildings.
